Students’ achievements recognised in Minister’s awards

Primary and secondary students from around South Australia have been recognised for their outstanding achievements during Children’s Week at the Minister for Education Award celebrations held at Athelstone School.

“It was a wonderful honour to present the awards and celebrate the outstanding and selfless work of these young South Australians,” said Minister for Education John Gardner.

“Their achievements academically, within their community, in sport, in the arts, and in their personal lives is an inspiration to their peers and family.

“The qualities displayed by these children demonstrate that they will make excellent leaders of the future, and I’m sure their parents and teachers are very proud of their efforts.”

Children’s Week is an annual festival, running this year from 19–28 October. The week aims to bring worldwide attention to the need to understand, appreciate and care about children.

This year’s theme is ‘Children have the right to give their opinion, and for adults to listen and take it seriously’.

The award recipient in the secondary category was Unley High School student Scout Sylva-Richardson, who wrote a picture book to help children better understand young people with autism and how their brain works.

A number of students were recognised in the primary category for raising money for others, contributing to environmental sustainability and supporting the wellbeing of their peers.
