Strathalbyn will play host to more than 5000 spectators this weekend as the Lower Lakes Stockman’s Challenge and Bush Festival kicks off.
Spectators from around the State, as well as over 500 interstate visitors, will witness the heart-stopping action of more than 37 Aussie bushmen and women showcasing their amazing skills on horseback competing for the title of Legend of the Lower Lakes.
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment David Ridgway said the event showcases some of Australia’s best stockmen and women and is a great opportunity for families to witness some explosive whip cracking, cattle handling, bareback riding, horseshoeing, cross country and pack saddle skills.
“In addition to the events, there are also plenty of off-course activities to enjoy - great food, music, entertainment as well as the famous camp oven roast gravy rolls,” said Minister Ridgway.
“The Government is supporting this event through our regional Events and Festivals Program in recognition of the significant positive impact events like these have on regional communities and their economies.
“I strongly encourage people heading to the festival to stop at the many friendly country towns along the way and sample local produce and enjoy the wonderful regional hospitality.
“The Marshall Liberal Government has recently launched the Regional Visitor Strategy and we are committed to working with the industry to deliver positive outcomes for our regions.”
South Australian Tourism Commission Chief Executive Rodney Harrex said The Lower Lakes and Stockman’s challenge is set to attract up to 5000 spectators to the region, including 500 from interstate.
“The Lower Lakes Stockman’s Challenge will be fun for the whole family with stalls with fabulous wares including leather goods, timber furniture, gifts and clothing.” Mr Harrex said.
The event received a multiple year funding agreement through Events South Australia’s 2018/19 Regional Events & Festivals Program.
