National Aboriginal Art and Culture Gallery

A Marshall Liberal Government will build the Australian National Aboriginal Art and Culture Gallery on the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site as part of its plan to create a cultural and economic precinct of international significance.

“Adelaide is the natural home for the first national collection of Aboriginal Australia’s artistic and cultural heritage and a major new gallery is the appropriate setting in which to exhibit such an important collection,” said State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall.

“The National Aboriginal Gallery will be of international significance and attract visitors from across Australia and throughout the world.

“The National Aboriginal Gallery will become one of the world’s great cultural institutions tracing the history of our country for 65,000 years.

“It is the jewel in the crown of the Liberal Party’s plans for the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site and will provide a significant cultural and economic boost for South Australia.

“The absence of a national gallery for Aboriginal Australia’s cultural and artistic heritage is a significant omission by Australian governments and a fantastic opportunity for South Australia.

“Aboriginal Australia is the world’s oldest living culture and a centre of dynamic artistic development in communities across Australia.

“A National Aboriginal Gallery will build a greater understanding of Aboriginal history and culture in the broader population.

“The South Australian Museum’s collection of Australian ethnographic material is the largest and most representative in the world.

“However, the Museum’s current storage facilities are limited with only five percent of its artefacts capable of being displayed at any one time.

“Aboriginal art is now keenly sought after in auction houses across the world and making Adelaide the centre of knowledge, study and acquisition of Aboriginal art will provide additional depth to our well deserved reputation as an artistic mecca.”
