The State Liberals latest election policy will slash the excessive number of ministerial staff and spin doctors currently employed by the Weatherill Government.
“The Weatherill Government’s bloated ministerial offices are a disgraceful waste of taxpayers’ money,” said Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas.
“This move would save $20 million over four years or about $5 million per year.
“Whilst critical health and education services have been cut everywhere the Weatherill Government has wasted millions on bloated staff numbers in ministerial offices.
“Some Ministers like Mr Koutsantonis have 23 staff in their office and total numbers in all offices are more than 250.
“There has been an explosion in the total numbers under the Labor Government when compared to the total of 190 under the former Liberal Government.
“Even when Mr Hamilton-Smith resigned last month spin doctors such as his former Chief of Staff Kevin Naughton have been kept on and simply transferred into Mr Weatherill’s office.
“It is now clear why the Weatherill Government fought for about 12 months to prevent the release under FOI (Freedom of Information) of the confidential Ministerial staff directory revealing the names and total numbers of Ministerial staff and spin doctors.
“There is no doubt that for most Ministers’ offices total staff numbers of about 15 will be more than enough to ensure an efficient operation of a Ministerial office.
“There has been strong opposition from the public service about the increased power and intrusion of ministerial staffers into the role and function of the public service and a Marshall Liberal Government will take action to reverse this intrusion.”
