Liberals boost fruit fly protection

The State Liberals have reaffirmed their commitment to keep South Australia fruit fly free following revelations today that Taiwan has banned Tasmanian fruit imports amid fruit fly concerns.

If elected, a Marshall Liberal Government will boost South Australia’s protection against fruit fly by installing two new quarantine bins, improving fruit fly awareness programs and increasing the monitoring and inspections of fruit fly disposal bins.

“South Australia’s horticulture industry is worth around $1.5 billion and supports thousands of South Australian jobs with overseas exports bringing in $270 million to our state,” said Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment Tim Whetstone.

“There is no pest more devastating to the horticulture industry than fruit fly and that’s why we are committing to strengthening our defence against this pest.

“As we’ve seen today with the Tasmanian example, a fruit fly outbreak could cripple our horticulture industry by cutting off lucrative overseas export markets.

“In my electorate, the Riverland community and economy are incredibly reliant on our horticulture industry and that’s why we will be investing in more fruit fly signage, more fruit disposal bins and improving the monitoring and inspection of quarantine bins.

“We must continue to invest in biosecurity to give our trading partners ongoing confidence that South Australian fruit is a premium product and absolutely pest free.”

Shadow Minister for Primary Industries David Ridgway said the State Liberals were serious about biosecurity and protecting the state’s $20 billion primary industries sector from any threat.

“The food sector alone supports one in five South Australian jobs and that’s why we’re investing in protecting this industry,” said Shadow Minister for Primary Industries David Ridgway.

“Investing in more quarantine bins, improving fruit fly awareness programs and the inspections of fruit fly disposal bins shows our strong commitment to keeping South Australia fruit fly free.”
