If elected a Marshall Liberal Government will develop a world-class tourism cycling trail to support more regional jobs, grow our economy and reinvigorate regional communities.
The Great Southern Bike Trail will link Adelaide and Melbourne and feature a series of tourism focused loops for the novice rider, families and more experienced cyclists.
“South Australia has some of the most unique environments and beautiful regions in the world and we need to be better selling these to the world,” said State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall.
“We will develop a world-class tourism cycling trail to attract more international and interstate visitors to South Australia which will inject millions of dollars into our economy and support regional jobs.
“The Great Southern Bike Trail will grow our tourism sector by encouraging visitors to get out of Adelaide and into our beautiful regions, staying longer and spending more money in South Australia.
“The trail will offer a variety of experiences which locals and visitors with varying degrees of cycling ability will be able to enjoy.
“Whether you’re a novice rider who wants to spend a day cycling down the coastline, a group of friends or a family who want to spend a few days cycling around one of our regions or an experienced rider who relishes the challenge of tackling the whole journey - the Great Southern Bike Trail will cater for everyone.
“Locals and visitors alike can enjoy our pristine coastline, premium wineries and restaurants, our diverse nature based and adventure tourism offerings and everything else our regions have to offer.
“Cycling tourism is worth $2.4 billion to the Australian economy each year so we know that cycling tourists spend a lot of money and we need to capitalise on that.
“This is a high yielding segment of the tourism market and given we know that for every $160,000 tourists spend in our state it creates one new tourism job, the potential is huge.
“That’s why we’re investing in growing our tourism industry by developing world-class tourism offerings like the Great Southern Bike Trail, opening up our reservoirs and investing $40 million in our Events Bid Fund.
“As hosts of the Tour Down Under South Australians are known for their love of cycling and with almost a quarter of a million South Australians cycling at least once per week, there’s a huge untapped domestic market that would relish a world-class tourism cycling trails in their backyard.”
