The latest tourism data shows South Australia’s national visitor expenditure has reached a record level of $5.6 billion, up eight per cent for the year ending June 2018.
“There is so much to choose from in SA and its fantastic to see more Aussies and South Aussies are making the most of our great experiences,” said Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment David Ridgway.
“South Australians are choosing to holiday at home, keeping important tourism dollars in the state, while an increase in interstate visitors is attracting new money for local businesses.
“The Marshall Government is investing in key tourism initiatives which drives more dollars into our economy and supports more South Australian jobs.
“Tourism is booming in regional South Australia. Our outback landscapes and other assets are attracting 62 per cent of all domestic visits – that’s huge.
“It’s great news all round for the industry. When people choose SA, they are supporting locals throughout the supply chain, which ultimately supports jobs in our state.”
Overnight visitation to and within South Australia has grown to a record high 6.5 million, up five per cent. Key interstate markets include Queensland, up 13 per cent, Victoria, up 10 per cent and New South Wales, up 8 per cent.
Our regional areas are reaping the rewards too, with regional visitation growing to a record 4 million visits and 14.4 million nights.
South Australian Tourism Commission, Chief Executive, Rodney Harrex, said we are proud of the performance of the visitor economy.
“Our record of delivering quality events, our marketing efforts, hardworking operators and exceptional experiences are propelling the State forward,” said Mr Harrex.
“Recent feedback from our tourism operators has been extremely upbeat, which suggests we can expect a positive outlook for the remainder of the year.
“I look forward to seeing this strong growth continue, with the state’s new tourism campaign ‘Rewards Wonder’ expected to further strengthen visitation and fill our hotels, bars and restaurants.
“With the Christmas break fast approaching, I encourage all South Australians to take the time to explore their own backyard – we’ve got something wonderful to be discovered everywhere you look.”
