Adelaide Cup public holiday to remain in March in 2020

South Australians will continue to observe the Adelaide Cup public holiday in March in 2020, to coincide with that month’s major events calendar which in the past has featured the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the Adelaide Festival, WOMADelaide and the Adelaide 500 car race.

Since 2006, the Adelaide Cup public holiday has been changed to the second Monday in March - from the third Monday in May - to reflect the shift in date for the running of the horse race.

Treasurer Rob Lucas said the Monday March 9, 2020 public holiday had today been proclaimed.

“Under the Holidays Act 1910, which sets SA’s annual public holiday calendar, the Adelaide Cup public holiday was only fixed for March until 2019,’’ said Treasurer Rob Lucas.

“This continuity will bring additional certainty for both South Australians and interstate and international tourists, who can now plan their schedules to be in Adelaide for so-called Mad March.

“It will also bring significant economic benefit to the state and local businesses who can count on the influx of visitors at that time.”
