The finest wines from the Coonawarra will be uncorked this weekend for the region’s flagship event – Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations.
Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, David Ridgway, said Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations is a wonderful opportunity for South Australia to showcase our regions, its food and wine to interstate visitors.
The festival is expected to attract more than 7,000 people – half of whom will travel from interstate and a further 2,000 from across South Australia.
“South Australians love to ‘holiday at home’ and soak up the unique beauty of our regions, while visitors equally appreciate the high-quality food and wine that the Coonawarra has to offer,” said Minister Ridgway.
“The program features more than 60 unique events at 34 wineries in the Coonawarra region across 5 weeks, providing plenty of opportunities to visit.”
“Tourism is a key driver of South Australia’s regional economy and this government is committed to encouraging more visitors to our regions.”
“We need to ensure visitors from around the globe and the country continue to flock here, which helps our local cafes, bars and hotels to thrive and puts money in the back pockets of our operators.”
South Australian Tourism Commission Chief Executive, Rodney Harrex, said supporting regional events like the Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations is part of the SATC’s long-term strategy to increase tourism across the state.
“In the Coonawarra, there are around 25 cellar doors, which are a huge drawcard for visitors,” Mr Harrex said.
“The South-East produces the finest cabernet sauvignon, and events like this put our reputation in the spotlight.”
“This year’s program is jam-packed with events - from special wine tastings to brunches, lunches, vineyard tours and dinners, all showcasing the regions burgeoning food credentials.”
“Our regional businesses and families rely heavily on a thriving tourism industry, receiving 41 per cent of total $6.7 billion visitor expenditure – so I encourage everyone to get out there and support regional SA.”
Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations will take place from September 28 to October 31, 2018. For more information, visit www.coonawarra.org
