Iain is a fifth generation South Australian and has lived in the Adelaide Hills all his life.

Iain was elected to State Parliament in December 1993 as the Member for Davenport. He has held several Ministerial portfolios including Industry and Trade, Correctional Services, Emergency Services, Police, Environment and Heritage, Recreation, Sport and Racing. He was also Australia’s first Minister for Volunteers. Iain was Leader of the Opposition from March 2006 to April 2007. He is currently the Shadow Minister for Work Cover, Industrial Relations, Small Business, Consumer Affairs, Gambling, Red Tape Reduction and Volunteers.

Iain is actively involved in his local community. He was the youngest ever State and National President of Apex and once rode a pushbike from Adelaide to Perth to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. His family’s involvement with Apex continues—his eldest son was awarded Australian Young Apexian of the Year 2006.
 
Iain has worked closely with local groups such as the Blackwood Recreation Centre and has been a member of the school councils at Blackwood Primary School, Hawthorndene Primary School and Blackwood High School.

Iain is married to Fiona. They have four children - Staten (24), Alexander (21), Fraser (18) and Allison (17). They live at Heathfield in the Adelaide Hills.


Electorate Profile

Sir Samuel Davenport (1818-1906) was elected to the Legislative Council in 1857. He was responsible for damming the Torrens Gorge, laying pipes to the city and encouraging the cultivation of a diverse range of crops and fruits, including the production of olive oil and the introduction of the docile Ligurian bee.

Area: approx. 37.4km2

Location: Encompasses plains and hills suburbs of the southern Adelaide foothills. The boundaries of the seat were changed at the 1998 redistribution to include Coromandel Valley and part of the suburbs of Flagstaff Hill and O'Halloran Hill to the south while the suburb of Belair to the north and east was excluded. The 2003 redistribution made no changes to the boundaries.

History: The seat was created at the 1969 redistribution.
