SA car sales down

Car sales in South Australia have continued to drop with the State recording the biggest decrease in new car sales of any mainland state, ABS statistics revealed today.

The sale of new cars in South Australia has fallen 6.1 per cent since last year.

“These are damning statistics for the Weatherill Labor Government,” Shadow Minister for Industry and Trade Steven Marshall said.

“These statistics follow four consecutive months of decreasing new car sales in South Australia – this is bad news for our automotive industry and bad news for consumer confidence in this state.”

Only 5,044 new cars were sold in January 2012, down from 5,369 for the same period in 2011.

“Combine these statistics with our terrible export growth, which barely keeps pace with inflation, and you have a grim picture of industry in South Australia,” Mr Marshall said.

“We have the highest stamp duty, the highest motorist charges and the highest land taxes in the nation which is putting huge pressure on household budgets.

“Is it any wonder that South Australians are forced to hold on to their cars longer than other mainland states?

“The Labor Government’s mismanagement of the economy means that South Australians have to tighten their household budgets.

“I call on the Weatherill Labor Government to reduce red tape and implement tax reform to take pressure off consumers and small business.”
