Job losses at Holden

Feb 02, 2012

Steven Marshall MP

Shadow Minister for Industry & Trade

Job losses at Holden

Only two weeks after Premier Weatherill announced a co-investment package to keep Holden operating in Elizabeth, Holden announced it is cutting production at its factory.

“Last week it was revealed that the package Premier Weatherill negotiated would lead to job losses at Holden and throughout the automotive supply chain,” Shadow Minister for Industry and Trade Steven Marshall said.

“This cut signals the first of these job losses at Holden.

“Was Premier Weatherill informed about cuts when he was in Detroit?

“Premier Weatherill needs to reveal exactly how many jobs he expects to lose at the Elizabeth plant.

“Premier Weatherill has refused repeated calls from the Liberal Opposition for a briefing and has still not provided any details on the co-investment package he negotiated with Holden.

“He has also refused to undertake a cost-benefit analysis of the co-investment package.

“With shifts being wound back, what guarantees are the workers at Holden and the taxpayers of this State getting for this deal?

“Premier Weatherill is looking more and more like former Premier Rann - long on spin and short on detail.

“Mr Weatherill is spending money this state doesn’t have – make no mistake, South Australia will need to borrow money to pay for this co-investment.

“South Australians deserve to know how much of their taxes will be provided to Holden, and they deserve to know how Premier Weatherill will ensure the long-term prosperity of the automotive industry, which is an integral part of the South Australian economy.

“It is time for Premier Weatherill to stop playing politics with the future of Holden.”
