Only Honolulu more expensive than Adelaide

Adelaide is the second most expensive medium-sized city in the world in which to do business, according to a recent survey.

The latest KPMG Report on costs of doing business in cities across the world shows that out of 33 cities with populations between 500,000 and 2 million, Adelaide was ranked 32nd with only Honolulu ranked more expensive to do business.

Just two years ago, Adelaide was ranked equal seventh. The biennial survey also shows that Adelaide has plummeted to 104th for all cities in 2012, compared with =47th in 2010, 33rd in 2008 and 3rd in 2006.

Liberal Leader Isobel Redmond said the results were a damning indictment of the Labor Government’s crippling taxation regime.

“Milan, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Calgary, Indianapolis – they are all cheaper to do business in than Adelaide. Adelaide’s business environment is only going to worsen once the full effect of the Gillard Government’s carbon tax takes hold,” Ms Redmond said.

“Adelaide businesses are also being crippled by excessive WorkCover levies, which have not been reduced to the levels that were promised.

“It is also telling that in previous years the Government has loudly proclaimed the results of KPMG’s survey, yet this year has been quiet.

“Labor’s failed policies and financial mismanagement are making it increasingly difficult for businesses to succeed.

“The Liberal Party has heard the cries for help from small business, and understands they are the driving force for employment and economic growth. Sadly, Premier Weatherill is more focussed on image than on the root causes of his Government’s failures,” Ms Redmond said.
