Operation Poach extended for another two years

A police operation tackling livestock theft across South Australia has been extended for at least another two years Chief Superintendent Fred Truman announced this morning.

Operation Poach was formed in mid-2011 and was integrated across the State’s police force to lower livestock theft with prevention SAPOL’s main focus.

Chief Superintendent Fred Truman says the operation has shown how significant the problem is in the country:

“This is a matter relative to the rural community in the same matter as other crimes are in other communities such as Adelaide, serious criminal trespasses and the like.  We need to give it the same relative focus in the country areas.” (639ABC, 05/07/2012)

Police reports show there has been an estimated 180 individual cases of sheep and cattle theft valued at $1.4 million since Operation Poach began.

“As the value of livestock continues to increase in Australia – the threat of livestock theft is a major concern for our state’s livestock farmers,” Shadow Minister for Agriculture Adrian Pederick said.

“SAPOL has realised livestock theft is a real issue and I am glad they have continued Operation Poach as a part of ongoing police activity.

“Operation Poach has increased the risk of getting caught making the opportunity for theft less attractive.

“Since Operation Poach was launched, farmers have reacted positively, which is reflected in the large number of individual reports.

“Unfortunately many minor incidents continue to go unreported, and although stock theft is a risk farmers have lived with for a long time, I urge farmers not to accept it.”

Tips on preventing stock theft and enhancing the prospects of recovering stolen livestock can be obtained from local police stations or via To report any theft call 131 444 in a timely manner.
