Minister Koutsantonis fails to claw-back Tiger money

The Government today announced their failure to recoup the $3.15 million of taxpayers’ money given to Tiger Airways to entice them to South Australia.

Instead, only $1.4 million will be repaid.

This announcement comes despite Minister Koutsantonis stating in 2011 that:

“No taxpayers’ money… will be lost. They have not met their obligations and they will be paying that money back.”[1]

Two lots of taxpayers money was originally given to Tiger – $2.25 million from the Department of Manufacturing, Innovation and Trade and a further $900,000 from SA Tourism.

Tiger Airways withdrew their Adelaide operations last year.

“Minister Koustantonis promised that all of the money would be retrieved, but now we hear the repayment falls well-short of the original amount,” Liberal Leader Isobel Redmond said.

“This is just another example of appalling financial mismanagement by this Labor Government.”

“This is money that could have been given to South Australian manufacturers or small business owners, but instead it is lost to a multi-national company with no connection to South Australia,” Shadow Minister for Industry and Trade Steven Marshall said.

“It beggars belief that such a substantial amount of taxpayers’ money could be lost.”
