South Australia building approvals worst in Australia
The number of new housing approvals in South Australia fell by a staggering 24 per cent in 2011, the worst performance of all states.
ABS statistics released today show nine consecutive months of decline in the number of new building approvals in South Australia.
These figures follow a succession of economic reports showing South Australia to be the worst performing state in numerous areas, such as business investment, economic growth and business confidence.
Shadow Treasurer Iain Evans said Labor’s uncompetitive tax regime was devastating the housing industry and affecting the confidence of South Australians to invest.
“Under Labor, South Australia is the highest taxing state in the nation creating an uncompetitive market and putting pressure on hard-working South Australians,” Mr Evans said.
“A carbon tax and new work place safety laws will add further pressure to an already struggling industry.
“South Australians are suffering under Labor’s high cost of living and lack the confidence to invest. This is having a negative impact on the housing industry.
“Treasurer Snelling needs to explain why once again South Australia is not keeping up with the rest of the country.”
